Sometimes no news is good news on this blog. Pretty much the case here lately. Days are flying by in a whirlwind. I was once anxiously awaiting summer to arrive, now I feel as though it just got here and is almost over! :(
Brock is stable for now with seizures.....I always hesitate to say too much about those evil things for fear they will rear their ugly head as soon as I comment. We have increased his Topamax and are still using the Trileptal and the Valproic Acid. He just had labs drawn last week and it took 8 sticks just to get blood. :( It is so pitiful that Brock has such poor veins.
Additionally, Brock had a Pre-Op physical with the pediatrician. He did great and also got his 5 shots for Kindergarten while there. The turkey smiled after receiving them! The only concerning issue I had with the visit was what I found on the copy of the H&P form from the Orthopedic surgeon. It stated that Brock had 2 dislocated hips, the right being worse than the left----But the surgery description was only for the right hip to be repaired. All this time I assumed it was a bilateral osteotomy! I called the surgeon's nurse and she said to wait and discuss all this in depth with the Dr. at our July 28th visit. Likely, if Brock will need the left hip done in the near future, the Dr. will go ahead and do both in this upcoming surgery. I certainly don't want to put Brock through another surgery and healing time if we can safely do both hips in one procedure.
Avery and Cora have their share of appointments as well. Last Friday, they each had eye exams. Cora was slightly farsighted with a little astigmatism, but "got by with the skin of her teeth" not requiring glasses. It was optional to get her glasses, so I opted to wait and see how she does in Kindergarten. Avery, didn't fair so well. She was more farsighted than Cora and had to get glasses. One main reason for the correction was due to the left eye being worse than the right causing some eye strain. Avery selected some fabulous pink Lascoste frames that she should be sporting in just a few days or so. Oh, how vision insurance would have been welcomed with that purchase.............
Tuesday, I took Brock to see an Endocrinologist. We were referred there by Neurology, and this appointment had been scheduled for MONTHS.... Since Brock has severe brain injuries, he is susceptible to maturing at a young age. The visit was to evaluate if possibly a surge in hormones could be contributing to the increased number of breakthrough seizures Brock has been experiencing. The Dr. gave a prescription to get some labs the next time Brock gets blood drawn. There was little concern that anything hormonally is contributing to Brock's seizures at this point, but it is just another aspect to follow......
Wednesday, Avery and Cora got hair cuts. They are all spiffed up now and we are down to just a punch list of things to do before the big day of Kindergarten. My deadline has been to get everything done by Aug 3, but somethings aren't working out. Each girl received their vaccinations, but not the full physical---I couldn't get that appointment until Aug. 10th. Also, Avery was due to get some fillings next week, on the 28th, but the dentist had to reschedule to Aug. 17th!
Next week Brock has appointments Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday!! AFO fitting, Neurology, and Orthopedic pre-op visit..... Looks like I will be putting lots of miles on the 'ol Sienna.
Next post I hope to have some pictures to share of Avery in her new glasses.
Stay tuned........
