I wish I had better topics to write about...... Brock has been having just a horrible time trying to get seizures under control. Last Sunday was very rough, when he had 3 in one day and was very affected by each one. This month in general has just been filled with seizures, some 5-10 seconds, others lasting over 2 minutes. I am so frustrated with the neurologists as all they want to do is increase meds!
Brock is on 3 different seizure meds. The valproic acid is a touchy one as it can have bad side effects that actually increase the number of Brock's seizures....therefore, the docs have lowered that dose, but increased his Topamax. Lowering the dose of valproic acid seemed to let Brock have 2 weeks seizure free. However, when the boogers started up with a vengeance again, the doctors wanted to increase the 3rd med, Trileptal. I was hesitant to increase because numerous times the neurologist had said it was the "least effective of the three" and we could eventually wean off of it. Now, I feel it is a last ditch effort to try and stop the recent outbreak of seizures.
Reluctantly, I increased his dose of Trileptal on Saturday. Sunday morning he had a violent seizure.......
Last night, Sunday night, Brock woke at 12:30 crying and shivering with some serious chills and rapid breathing. He was really freaking me out and I was beginning to question if he was having seizures or just chills..... When Brock calmed about an hour later, I could feel him heating up while I was holding him. Axillary temp was 102! Supposedly, you add a degree so that made a very hot 103 degree boy who typically runs only 97 degrees! I gave Motrin and was able to get Brock settled down to sleep again.
That is until------ Cora came downstairs to tell me her tummy huuuuuurrrrrrrrttttttt. Her tummy hurt all over my new bedroom carpet! I quickly told her to step into the bathroom (less than 3 ft behind her) and she continued to demonstrate just how badly her tummy did hurt. :(
All the commotion woke up Brock. It was a restless night.
Today, Brock has already had a nasty seizure lasting over 2 minutes. It wiped him out. Cora has been sleeping off and on in between her vomiting episodes. I have a splitting headache and can only think of what there is to snack upon...... Grrrr. It is just one of those days I suppose.
Per Epileptologist, I am to keep Brock's dose the same of Trileptal, but give more of it in the a.m. I've been tracking a trend with the time of day Brock's seizures happen, and it seems he likes the 9:30 am range as well as the 2 pm time slot. Go figure.
Brock already has an appointment with the endocrinologist on Wednesday, so I asked if we could see Neurology that same day. They are in the same building and even share the same check-in area. I may be waiting all afternoon, but Brock will be able to be "fit in" so that I can talk with the neurologist.
Pray for some answers other than increasing the same meds! Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
